    ✅ RECOMMENDED: Search by Name

This is the easiest option for most people. You'll search using your first and last name.

📋 OPTION 2: Search by Case Number

Use this if you know your case number (like FECR123456 or SRCR654321).

🏛️ OPTION 3: Search by Party Name

Similar to name search but shows more options. Good if you have a common name.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: For this guide, we'll use the "Search by Name" option since it's the most straightforward. Click on "Search by Name" on the Iowa Courts Online homepage.
    3
    ✏️ Enter Your Information

    Fill Out the Search Form:

💡 WHY ADD DATE OF BIRTH? If you have a common name (like "John Smith"), adding your date of birth helps filter out other people with the same name. This makes your search results more accurate.
  • Enter your LAST NAME in the first box
  • Enter your FIRST NAME in the second box
  • Optional: Add your middle name if you have one
  • Recommended: Enter your date of birth in MM/DD/YYYY format
  • Leave "County" blank to search all Iowa counties
  • Click the button
  • 4
    📄 Review Your Search Results

    What the Results Look Like:

FECR012345 SMITH, JOHN ROBERT Criminal 03/15/2018 Closed
SRCR067890 SMITH, JOHN ROBERT Criminal 07/22/2020 Closed
  • You'll see a list of all cases with your name
  • Each case will show the case number, your name, case type, and date
  • The case number starts with letters that tell you what county and type:
    • FE = Felony
    • AG = Aggravated Misdemeanor
    • SR = Serious Misdemeanor
    • SM = Simple Misdemeanor
  • CLICK ON THE CASE NUMBER (the blue link) to open that case
  • ⚠️ DO THIS FOR EACH CASE: You need to check EVERY case individually to see if you owe money. One case might be paid off while another still has a balance due.
    5
💰 Find the Financial Information Tab

    Once Inside a Case:

    📑
LOOK FOR THESE TABS AT THE TOP:

[Case Information] [Charges] [Financial] [Hearings] [Docket Entries]
  • After clicking on a case number, you'll see the case details page
  • At the top of the page, there are several tabs or sections
  • Look for and CLICK ON the "Financial" tab
  • This tab shows ALL money-related information for this case
  • 💡 CAN'T FIND THE FINANCIAL TAB? Sometimes it's labeled as "Financial Information" or "Account Summary." It might also be a link that says "View Financial Details" depending on the county's court system.
    6
    🧮 Understanding Your Financial Information

    Key Financial Terms You'll See:

    💵 FINES

Money you must pay as punishment for the offense (set by Iowa law)

    📋 COURT COSTS

Administrative fees charged by the court (usually $60-$100)

    💰 SURCHARGE

Additional 35% added to criminal fines (required by Iowa law)

    🔄 RESTITUTION

Money to compensate a victim for their losses

    🏛️ ATTORNEY FEES

Fees for court-appointed attorney (if you had a public defender)

💡 ALL OF THESE MUST BE PAID IN FULL For expungement purposes, you must have paid EVERY dollar owed, including fines, costs, surcharges, restitution, and attorney fees for the case that you are seeking to be expunged.
    7
    📊 Calculate What You Owe

    Example Financial Summary:

Description Amount Assessed Amount Paid Balance Due
    Fine $625.00 $625.00 $0.00
    Surcharge (35%) $218.75 $218.75 $0.00
    Court Costs $100.00 $100.00 $0.00
    Attorney Fees $250.00 $150.00 $100.00
    TOTAL $1,193.75 $1,093.75 $100.00
  • LOOK FOR: "Balance Due," "Amount Owed," or "Outstanding Balance"
  • CHECK: Each line item separately - even if most things are paid, one item might have a balance
  • FIND: The TOTAL balance at the bottom
  • NOTE: The "Balance Due" column on the far right is what you still owe
  • ⚠️ IN THIS EXAMPLE: Even though most items are paid, the Attorney Fees still have a $100.00 balance. This person is NOT eligible for expungement yet because they still owe money.
    8
    ✅ Determine Your Payment Status

    Two Possible Outcomes:

    ✅ SCENARIO 1: YOU'VE PAID EVERYTHING
    Total Balance Due: $0.00
    What this means:
    • You have met the financial requirement for expungement
    • You can proceed with your expungement application
    • Save or print this page as proof of payment
⚠️ SCENARIO 2: YOU STILL OWE MONEY
    Total Balance Due: $XXX.XX
    What this means:
    • You are NOT yet eligible for expungement
    • You must pay the full balance before applying
    • Once paid, wait 7-10 days for it to show as paid in the system
    • Then check again to verify $0.00 balance
💡 HOW TO PAY WHAT YOU OWE: Contact the Clerk of Court in the county where your case was filed. They can accept payment by phone, mail, or in person. Ask for a receipt!
    9
📝 Save or Print Your Records

    Important: Keep Documentation

  • Print the Financial page showing $0.00 balance due
  • Take a screenshot of the payment information
  • Save as PDF using your browser's print function (Print → Save as PDF)
  • Write down the case number and date you checked
  • 10
    🎯 Summary: Do You Qualify?

    Financial Requirement Checklist:

For EACH case you are seeking to expunge, verify that:

✅ If All Boxes Are Checked:

You meet the financial requirement for expungement of this case!
Next step: Contact an expungement attorney.

💡 HAVE OTHER CASES WITH UNPAID BALANCES? While you only need to pay off the specific case you want expunged, having outstanding court obligations on OTHER cases can make your expungement process more complicated. If you can afford to pay off all your court debt, doing so may make your expungement application proceed more smoothly.
    🛠️ Troubleshooting Common Issues

    Problem #1: "I can't find my case"

    Solutions:
    • Try searching with just your last name (no first name)
    • Try without your middle name
    • Check if you used a different name (maiden name, nickname)
    • Search by case number if you know it
    • Try searching in the specific county where the case was filed

Problem #2: "The website says 'No records found'"

    Possible reasons:
    • Your case may have already been expunged (records are hidden)
    • The case might be very old (pre-2000) and not digitized
    • There might be a typo in your search
    • The case might be sealed or confidential

Problem #3: "There's no Financial tab"

    What to do:
    • Look for "Account Information," "Payment Details," or similar
    • Scroll down - financial info might be at the bottom of the main page
    • Some counties have different systems - call the clerk's office
    • The case might have no financial obligations if it was dismissed early

Problem #4: "The balance shows $0 but I'm not sure I paid"

    What this might mean:
    • You paid in full (good!)
    • The case was dismissed before financial obligations were assessed
    • A payment plan was completed
    • Wages were garnished until paid
    • If unsure, call the clerk's office to verify
